A TRENCH COAT SOLUTION FOR PET ANXIETY

ThunderCoat provides added warmth and protection from the rain when needed, while continuing to provide the calming benefits of ThunderShirt. ThunderCoat effortlessly detaches from the ThunderShirt, so that you can easily switch between the two. ThunderCoat should only be used when your dog may need additional warmth. In warm environments use the ThunderShirt without the ThunderCoat.

For many anxieties, ThunderShirt does not require any training of your dog to be an effective solution. Many dogs will exhibit reduced or eliminated symptoms with the very first usage of ThunderShirt, (e.g. eliminated shaking, reduced panting, etc). Some dogs require three or four usages before they begin to show improvement. After receiving your ThunderCoat, we recommend following these simple steps:

STEP ONE

Perform the “Initial Fitting and Conditioning” as described to the right.

STEP TWO

When an anxiety trigger is likely or already present (e.g. thunderstorm approaching) slip the ThunderCoat onto your dog. Observe the results. Many dogs need no further treatment for many anxiety types. Are you satisfied with the improvement you see? If not, please proceed to Step 3 below.

STEP THREE

(Not Required In Many Cases): If your dog’s anxiety still needs additional treatment, we recommend integrating ThunderCoat into a training program. Go to www.thunderworks.com and click on “How It Works” for information on recommended training programs. Or just call 866.892.2078.

INITIAL FITTING AND CONDITIONING

ThunderCoat is designed to be very easy to put on and take off…no need for pulling anything over her head or threading her legs through leg holes. After you first receive your ThunderCoat we recommend the following steps while your dog is NOT feeling anxiety:

  • Before putting ThunderCoat on your dog for the first time, offer a small food treat to your dog using the folded ThunderCoat as a “plate”. Dogs typically become more comfortable and trusting of something that “brings” them food or anything that they associate with food. So this is an easy little trick to quickly create a positive association with ThunderCoat for your dog.
  • Next, simply follow the “Fitting Instructions” on the other side of this sheet. Leave ThunderCoat on for 5-10 minutes.

Following these simple instructions allows you to learn exactly how to use ThunderCoat while the dog is calm and helps to avoid the risk that she might begin to associate ThunderCoat with what bothers her. It can also be beneficial to put ThunderCoat on every 4-8 weeks in the absence of anxiety. To further strengthen positive associations with ThunderCoat, provide a treat to your dog each time right after you put it on. Most ThunderCoat dog owners report that their dogs really enjoy wearing their ThunderCoats, and many dogs even go on their own to where their ThunderCoats are stored when a storm approaches or some other anxiety trigger happens!

how thundershirt works

ThunderShirt uses gentle hugging to calm your dog or cat. With its patented design, ThunderShirt’s gentle, constant pressure has a dramatic calming effect for most dogs and cats if they are anxious, fearful or overexcited. Based on surveys completed by over two thousand customers, over 80% of dogs and cats show significant improvement in symptoms when using ThunderShirt. ThunderShirt is already helping hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats around the world and is recommended by thousands of veterinarians and trainers. How does ThunderShirt work? Experts believe that pressure has a calming effect on the nervous system, possibly by releasing a calming hormone like endorphins. Using pressure to relieve anxiety in people and animals has been a common practice for years. Below are several examples.

how thundershirt work

ThunderShirt helps keep animals calm so they are more comfortable in situations that were once frightening.

parents use swaddling to calm and sooth an inconsolable infant

Wrapping a baby snuggly in a blanket, or “swaddling”, is a very common practice for helping to calm an irritable or upset baby, or to help a baby to fall asleep. Medical professionals today routinely teach swaddling to new parents, and families and friends have been passing down this wisdom for centuries. Some experts believe that swaddling mimics the warmth and pressure babies experience in the womb. But whatever the reason, there is no denying its success!

Parents have been comforting and soothing their babies with the gentle pressure of swaddling for centuries.

people with autism use pressure to relieve their persistent anxiety

Many people with autism suffer from persistent anxiety. Dr. Temple Grandin realized that applying gentle pressure around her torso provided wonderful relief for her, and this led to the design of her “Hug Machine”. Now thousands of people with autism routinely use pressure to bring comfort. Over the years, it has also been learned that this kind of pressure can help with a wide variety of behavioral issues for both adults and children. “Pressure Vests” and “Weighted Vests” are routinely used by special needs teachers to provide calming and focus in a wide variety of circumstances.

ttouch® trainers use pressure to address a wide variety of animal anxieties

For many years, Tellington TTouch Trainers have been using pressure with dogs and other animals to help with a wide variety of issues, including fear of noises and separation anxieties. Prior to ThunderShirt, they frequently wrapped ace bandages around dogs and cats to achieve this pressure, but this was frequently very difficult to apply and unsafe to leave on an animal when unsupervised. Now most TTouch Trainers are using ThunderShirts because of their ease of use and safety. And ThunderShirts look great! As a component of TTouch Training, ThunderShirt is helping families, veterinarians and trainers increase an animal’s self-confidence, providing comfort in situations that were once frightening or stressful.

why are dogs afraid of thunder and other noises?

According to our research, dog thunderstorm anxiety or fear of noises can arise from a variety or combination of factors. Some dogs have suffered a traumatic event involving loud noises or lightning strikes that creates a historic "trigger" for them to become anxious. Some dog breeds may have a genetic predisposition towards noise anxiety while some studies suggest that storm or noise anxiety could be a result of aging or hearing loss. No matter the specific cause, the need to relieve your dog’s fears becomes clear when your dog hides, shakes, or worse every time a storm rumbles.

symptoms of dog thunderstorm anxiety

The symptoms of noise anxiety range from mild to severe. Milder cases can include shaking, panting, hiding, barking, yawning, licking and clinging during the noise. More severe cases can include bolting, running, anxious pacing, chewing, defecating indoors, jumping through a plate glass window or even seizures. Recognizing and treating noise anxiety can be critical for the health and well-being of your dog. Based on our survey of over 2,000 dog owners in the United States, over 17% of all dogs suffer from fear of thunder or some other noise.

stories from dogs with storm anxiety

“We have an 80 lb. Boxer with degenerative disc disease. This boy is totally bizarre in a thunderstorm. Panting, attempting to get in the bathtub, very stressed! Plus, we live at the beach – a lot of summer storms. What a different dog when we put on his ThunderShirt! We have had it 3 weeks and this is a happy fellow. We were on the screen porch last night in a storm and he slept through it. I woke him when I was ready to go in. I am ordering a second! We cannot recommend it enough to friends and family!”

what is dog separation anxiety?

Leaving your dog or puppy home alone is never easy, but for many dogs, separation from their families can cause severe anxiety and real problems. Veterinarians and trainers call this condition “dog separation anxiety.” Based on our survey of over 2,000 dog owners in the United States, over 13% of all dogs suffer from separation anxiety. And the consequences can be severe for your dog, your family and your property.

symptoms of separation anxiety in dogs

According to our surveys and other sources (such as the ASPCA), separation anxiety affects older dogs and puppies alike, and can include a wide variety of symptoms such as indoor urination, defecation, destruction of furniture, barking, howling, chewing, digging, escape attempts and other anxious behaviors. Some dogs express it as restlessness, an attempt to keep you from leaving, or the appearance of general depression. It’s heartbreaking to know that your dog is suffering while you are away, but separation is an unavoidable reality for most families. Thankfully, there are solutions to try.

stories from dogs with separation anxiety

“We found Popeye running down the street in our new neighborhood and took him in as a foster until he can be adopted out. It became apparent that he suffers from extreme separation anxiety. He destroyed blinds, doors, baseboards and walls. He has managed to escape from every crate we tried, hurting himself in the process. His anxiety quickly transferred to the rest of my family, never knowing what we were coming home to was taking its toll. We tried herbal remedies, Prozac, sedatives, diet changes, distractions, kongs, TV’s and training – nothing worked! Then we invested a measly $40 in the ThunderShirt and our entire lives have changed. The difference in his demeanor was immediate. We can now leave our house in peace knowing that it will look the same when we get back. Even more importantly, Popeye is set up for success when we manage to find him a lucky forever family.”

what is car travel anxiety?

While many dogs enjoy car rides, for some others, a car ride can become a trip of anxiety or over-excitement. According to our survey of over 2,000 dog owners across the United States, over 5% of dogs suffer from issues during travel. These issues can create real problems for taking your dog to the veterinarian, the groomer, or anywhere involving a car trip. Many dogs are so fearful of traveling, that even getting them in the car can be a struggle. Other forms of travel are also difficult for many dogs. Air travel in particular can be a very traumatic event that often requires heavy sedation.

Symptoms of Dog Travel Anxiety

Car travel anxiety can present itself in many ways such as carsickness, barking, whining, pacing, scratching and restlessness. Many dogs become dangers to themselves and others by jumping on the driver or otherwise distracting concentration from the road. Like other forms of dog anxiety, these symptoms can often result in injury to your dog, damage to your property, and expensive cleaning and repairs. These negative travel experiences can also compound the fear a dog already feels toward vet visits and groomer visits.

stories from dogs with travel anxiety

“Hi, My name is Buddy. I’m a former medical research beagle who gets so car sick that the only thing that works for my nausea is Cerenia (prescription). Every time we go to our cabin in the mountains, I have to take Cerenia in order to survive the trip. Well, here’s good news for all of us who struggle with doggy motion sickness. I now have a ThunderShirt. I thought it was just some crazy shirt I had to wear to look cute. Well, let me tell you, I love it. Now I can travel drug free. I feel much better about going in the car, where I hunker down and sleep most of the way. ThunderShirt works for me. No vomiting, no restlessness, no pooping, no anxiety. ThunderShirt works for me. Now my sister beagle is wearing one too. We former research doggies are anxious about pretty much everything. Thanks, ThunderShirt, we appreciate you.”

Why does Thundershirt work?

ThunderShirt’s patended design is a pressure wrap that applies a gentle, constant pressure on a dog’s torso. From real world experience, we know with certainty that ThunderShirt DOES WORK. That is why we are able to offer a money-back guarantee. A survey of ThunderShirt users shows that over 80% of dogs show significant improvement in at least one anxiety symptom when using ThunderShirt.

According to some experts such as Dr. Temple Grandin, pressure has a calming effect on the nervous system. Using pressure to relieve anxiety has been a common practice for years. For example:

  • TTouch dog trainers use pressure to address a variety of anxieties.

  • Some autistic people use pressure to relieve their persistent anxiety.

Until now, there just hasn’t been a well-designed, inexpensive pressure wrap commonly used for canine anxiety.

Why doesn’t my vet know about this remedy for anxiety and fear issues?

Good question! With millions of dogs suffering from anxiety, it amazes us that such an easy to use, inexpensive solution like ThunderShirt isn’t more widely known and used. ThunderShirt is working to change that; we have launched an outreach campaign for veterinarians. If you would like us to speak with your veterinarian, please contact us.

What training is required for using ThunderShirt for anxiety and fear issues?

For many types of anxiety no training is necessary! Just put ThunderShirt onto your dog and you will likely see results with the very first usage. However, for some dogs, it may take two to three usages to see results. For some more serious anxiety cases, such as severe separation anxiety, you should consult a good trainer for how to integrate ThunderShirt into a training program.

Can I wash and dry ThunderShirt? Remove hair from fastener hooks?

ThunderShirt is made with durable, washable fabric. When necessary, ThunderShirt may be washed in a regular cycle using regular laundry detergent and cold water. Hang to dry.

If necessary, to remove dog hair from your ThunderShirt’s fastener hooks, we recommend using a standard dog “slicker” brush (Available at most any pet store for as little as $2.99). A couple of strokes and the fastener hooks will be nearly completely hair-free.

How long can I leave a ThunderShirt on my dog?

ThunderShirt is designed to be safe to leave on your dog for extended periods of time when appropriate for the situation or issue that you are addressing.  ThunderShirt is made out of light-weight, breathable fabric, so over-heating is very rarely an issue.  When properly sized and properly put on with a comfortably snug fit, your dog should be very comfortable for extended periods. Some customers allow their dog or cat to wear their ThunderShirt for 8-10 hours per day while at work. It is typically safe to leave a dog unsupervised while wearing a ThunderShirt.  If you will be allowing your dog to wear a ThunderShirt for extended periods (e.g. over 2 hours), during the initial periods, we do recommend removing the ThunderShirt frequently to check for any signs of irritation points.  Irritation points are very rare, but best to be cautious.

How do I put ThunderShirt onto my dog?

We designed ThunderShirt to be very easy to put on your dog, even if she is already in a state of anxiety. Click here to see detailed illustrations.

Are there any special sizing and fit considerations for male dogs?

When fitting a ThunderShirt on a male dog, the straps that go around the stomach area should not cover or push on the genitals or prepuce.  If the ThunderShirt rubs against the genitals or prepuce, irritation may result.

What size is right for my dog?

sizing chart

Metric Sizing Chart

metric-sizing chart
sizing chart

Measure “Chest Size” as illustrated by red arrow below

ThunderShirt comes in seven different sizes... XXL, XL, L, M, S, XS, and XXS. See the table to find the right size for your dog. Like people, dogs come in many different shapes and sizes, so if your dog has unusual proportions, you may need to go up or down a size versus the “standard” measurements. But the ThunderShirt is designed to be very adjustable to accommodate different dog shapes and still be easy to put on.

Is overheating a concern when using a ThunderShirt?

Except in extreme conditions (e.g. 90 degrees Fahrenheit in the sun), overheating is not typically a concern when using a ThunderShirt. Dogs cool themselves primarily through their mouths and paws, and a ThunderShirt is constructed of a thin, breathable fabric. In fact, the state of Florida is one of our biggest markets. But if you feel that overheating might be a problem for your particular circumstance, please monitor your dog for any signs of overheating such as heavy panting or tongue hanging out of the mouth. Remove the ThunderShirt if you see any signs of overheating.
